Yesterday the second Deep Talk took place in the УЛАФ СТЕ cafe. This is a biweekly event hosted by two 18-year-old Dutch volunteers and it provides participants with an opportunity to open-endedly join in on a conversation about a deeper topic, to gain insights, and to practice speaking English.
Last time we discussed the topic of First Impressions. This week we were happy to see some familiar faces of people who joined us two weeks ago, and some new participants. Once everyone was gathered everyone introduced themselves and we told them this week’s topic: Life Goals. Because this might not be an easy thing to talk about, we first all took 5 minutes for ourselves to think about what our own life goals might be. Then we started with the questions. The way we organize the Deep talks is that before the event we fill a jar with questions, written on small pieces of paper. Then we can pass the jar around so everyone takes out a question, reads it out loud, and then tries to give an answer. Anyone who has something to add or ask may always jump in. This way we shape the talk and allow everyone to have input in the discussion. For the topic of Life Goals, we had questions like ‘How important are goals to you?’, ‘What is holding you back?’, ‘How do life goals and the meaning of life relate?’ and many more. After about an hour of talking, we felt satisfied with our conversation and rounded off. Having gained some new ideas and views we look back on a great event, thanks to all the participants!
