Two weeks ago, two Ukrainian volunteers from SFERA Macedonia, Valeria and Uliana, decided to embark on the zero-waste lifestyle journey while staying in Bitola. It was their first experience with zero waste, they didn’t know what was ahead, nor could they imagine the influence it’d have on them.
On the 15th of May they presented their gained insights and conclusions in SFERA office. Participants of the workshop were able to find out about what is zero waste, investigate the stages of stepping into the zero-waste lifestyle, supported by the girls’ personal examples from their experiment, discuss the pros and cons and feasibility of such a life in a Macedonian reality. What we discovered is that there are people in Bitola who are interested in this topic and those who are willing to try it themselves and then share with the community to raise the awareness and make changes.
The motto of the meeting could be a quote by Lao Tzu “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.” Significant changes rarely come overnight. More often they require a lot of persistence and dedication.
The presentation was followed by the group discussion. It was a fruitful time and we all agreed that setting an example is the first step of the journey. We sincerely hope that the efforts put into the workshop could plant a seed in the participants’ minds and that it will grow into positive changes in the society.
